ShopperTrak Reports Year-Over-Year Retail Sales Rise 13.5 Percent for Week Ending March 22
Week-Over-Week Sales Rise 9.9 Percent
CHICAGO – March 25, 2008 - ShopperTrak RCT Corporation's National Retail Sales Estimate™ (NRSE) today reported that "purpose shopping" for the Easter holiday helped fuel consumer spending and boost both year-over-year and week-over-week retail performance. Sales for the week ending March 22 as compared to last year rose a solid 13.5 percent; while the weekly comparison versus the previous week ending March 15 showed a steady 9.9 percent rise.
In addition to taking advantage of Easter holiday promotions, consumers also visited retail locations last week to purchase numerous spring break related items, allowing retailers to experience the 11th year-over-year retail sales increase out of 12 possible weeks in 2008.
"Retail commerce reports suggest the American consumer is still willing to spend despite continued economic pressures and widespread talk of a recession," said Bill Martin, co-founder of ShopperTrak. "That being said, we anticipate this sales pace will slow a bit over the coming weeks as retailers experience the annual post-Easter lull."
ShopperTrak’s NRSE also reports that to date, average weekly sales for the month of March have increased 6.4 percent as compared to last year.
Developed by ShopperTrak, the NRSE provides a nationwide benchmark of retail sales.
