ShopperTrak Reports Year-Over-Year Retail Sales Fall 0.8 Percent for Week Ending May 17

Week-Over-Week Sales Down 10.5 Percent

CHICAGO – May 20, 2008 - ShopperTrak RCT Corporation's National Retail Sales Estimate™ (NRSE) today reported that retail sales for the week ending May 17 decreased 0.8 percent as compared to the same period last year.

On a week-over-week comparison, retail performance seems to have decreased to more seasonable levels following Mother’s Day, as sales for the week ending May 17 slipped 10.5 percent as compared to the previous week ending May 10.

"Although week over week sales fell, retailers can expect to see sales increase this week as consumers gear up for Memorial Day weekend before returning to seasonal levels after the holiday," said Bill Martin, co-founder of ShopperTrak.

Additionally, ShopperTrak’s NRSE reported year-over-year sales have increased 14 out of a possible 20 weeks so far in 2008.

Developed by ShopperTrak, the NRSE provides a nationwide benchmark of retail sales. It is derived from the U.S. Commerce Department's GAFO (general merchandise, apparel, furniture, sporting goods, electronics, hobby, books and other related store sales) statistic, as well as ShopperTrak's proprietary industry intelligence on shopper movement and sales statistics. This gives retailers, investors and policy makers the most accurate and timely information on consumer trends available today.
