ShopperTrak Reports Retail Sales Rise 1.7 Percent for the Month of May
Total U.S. Foot Traffic Increases 3.7 Percent for Same Period
CHICAGO – June 11, 2008 - ShopperTrak RCT Corporation’s National Retail Sales Estimate today reported that May retail sales rose a slight 1.7 percent while the company’s Retail Traffic Index (SRTI) reported total U.S. foot traffic increased 3.7 percent for the same time period.
Although oil prices reached record high levels during the month, consumers continued to visit various retail locations and spend – especially early in the month for Mother’s Day gifts. While retail sales returned to slower, more seasonal levels later in the month, traffic remained steady as bargain shoppers continued making visits to take advantage of post holiday sales to spend at a discounted rate.
"The May traffic performance is encouraging as it marks the second consecutive monthly increase following a period of 16 months where retailers experienced a downward traffic trend,” said Bill Martin, co-founder of ShopperTrak. “If, as anticipated, fuel prices continue to reach record highs throughout the summer, we might see retail traffic slow a bit, but consumers have adjusted to this in the recent past and we expect them to remain resilient and continue to spend. By economizing trips and spending more time and more money during each visit, the American consumer has seemingly proven today’s economic landscape isn’t stopping them from purpose shopping and visiting their favorite retail locations."
On a weekly level, ShopperTrak’s NRSE reported sales for the week ending June 7 increased a steady 4.0 percent as compared to last year, while weekly sales rose 1.6 percent versus the previous seven day period ending May 31 as shoppers began spending for Father’s Day.
To date, ShopperTrak’s NRSE reports retail sales have increased 16 out of a possible 23 weeks in 2008.
Developed by ShopperTrak, the NRSE provides a nationwide benchmark of retail sales. It is derived from the U.S. Commerce Department's GAFO (general merchandise, apparel, furniture, sporting goods, electronics, hobby, books and other related store sales) statistic, as well as ShopperTrak proprietary industry intelligence on shopper movement and sales statistics.
The ShopperTrak Retail Traffic Index™ measures traffic across five separate retail segments including total U.S. retailing. Available as a database or in newsletter format, SRTI reports national and regional traffic trends in a rolling 16 month trend line.
