ShopperTrak Reports Year-Over-Year Retail Sales Rise 4.2 Percent for Week Ending June 28
Year-Over-Year Sales Post Sixth Straight Increase Despite Record High Gas Prices
CHICAGO – July 1, 2008 - ShopperTrak RCT Corporation's National Retail Sales Estimate™ (NRSE) today reported that in spite of record high gasoline prices and the continuing unstable economy, retail sales for the week ending June 28 increased a steady 4.2 percent, marking the sixth consecutive year-over-year rise.
On a weekly level, consumer spending continued to reflect slower, more expected seasonal levels for the period following Father’s Day and preceding July 4 weekend. Sales for the week ending June 28 as compared to the previous week ending June 21 slipped 1.9 percent, marking the second straight week-over-week decline.
"While we won’t know for sure until we analyze and distribute our June GAFO retail sales and traffic data next week, to date June has been very strong with every week posting a retail sales increase over the same time period last year,” said Bill Martin, co-founder of ShopperTrak. “And even though Independence Day promotions will drive sales early in July, we don’t expect this positive trend to continue as a significant move in GAFO retail sales isn’t expected until the end of the month when back-to-school shopping begins."
Additionally, ShopperTrak’s NRSE reported year-over-year sales have increased 19 out of a possible 26 weeks so far in 2008.
