ShopperTrak Reports Year-Over-Year Retail Sales Rise 2.9 Percent for Week Ending July 26
Week-Over-Week Sales Rise 0.1 Percent
CHICAGO – July 29, 2008 - ShopperTrak RCT Corporation's National Retail Sales Estimate™ (NRSE) today reported that year-over-year retail sales for the week ending July 26 increased 2.9 percent, marking the third consecutive month of positive yearly sales despite today’s slumping economy.
On a weekly comparison, GAFO retail sales were flat as consumers gear up for the official start of the back-to-school shopping season next week. Sales for the week ending July 26 rose 0.1 percent as compared to the previous week ending July 19. ShopperTrak expects both weekly and yearly sales to increase over the next couple of weeks as the back-to-school season moves into full swing.
"Although some economists are forecasting a soft back-to-school shopping season, we expect early promotions and continued sales will drive consumers into retail locations to spend throughout the season,” said Bill Martin, co-founder of ShopperTrak. “As always, retailers that provide the best value for the consumer’s dollar should experience steady sales and see modest year-over-year gains."
Developed by ShopperTrak, the NRSE provides a nationwide benchmark of retail sales. It is derived from the U.S. Commerce Department's GAFO (general merchandise, apparel, furniture, sporting goods, electronics, hobby, books and other related store sales) statistic, as well as ShopperTrak's proprietary industry intelligence on shopper movement and sales statistics.
