ShopperTrak Reports Week-Over-Week Retail Sales Slip 0.4 Percent for Week Ending September 27
Year-Over-Year Sales Rise 4.9 Percent Highlighting Slow 2007 Performance
CHICAGO – September 30, 2008 - ShopperTrak RCT Corporation's National Retail Sales Estimate™ (NRSE) today reported that week-over-week retail sales for the week ending September 27 as compared to the previous week ending September 20 fell 0.4 percent, while year-over-year sales rose 4.9 percent as compared to a rather weak shopping period in 2007.
Year-over-year sales posted a slight increase for the sixth consecutive week, but as last week this rise once again indicates weakness during the same seven-day period in 2007 as opposed to retail sales strength this year. The slight week-over-week retail sales decrease experienced last week better represents current retail performance and is more in line with ShopperTrak’s September monthly projection of a 1.8 percent gain over last year.
“Although the recent financial crisis does not seem to have immediately caused a precipitous decline in retail shopping, we’re rather cautious about the near term GAFO retail sales performance,” said Bill Martin, co-founder of ShopperTrak. “And even though our September monthly numbers won’t be announced until next week, our slight 1.8 percent year-over-year projection indicates the overall weakness in the current retail marketplace.” Martin continued: “Needless to say, retailers will be paying close attention to this trend heading into the critical holiday shopping season.”
