BLACK FRIDAY WEEKEND SALES RISE 6.5 PERCENT COMPARED TO SAME THREE-DAY PERIOD IN 2006
Weekend Foot Traffic Increases 4.3 Percent
CHICAGO - November 28, 2007 - ShopperTrak RCT Corporation today reported that the first full weekend of the holiday shopping season set a positive tone for retailers as the company's National Retail Sales Estimate (NRSE) showed a healthy 6.5 percent increase for the full Black Friday weekend as compared to the same three-day period last year.
Despite myriad economic pressures heading into the season, consumers kicked off holiday spending with an impressive $10.3 billion spent on Black Friday, followed by a steady $6.1 billion spent on Black Saturday, posting 8.3 and 5.4 percent year-over-year increases from these crucial days last season. Closing out the weekend, Sunday shoppers spent $3.6 billion, up 4.2 percent versus Black Sunday 2006 - totaling $20 billion spent during the weekend.
Additionally, ShopperTrak's Retail Traffic Index (SRTI) reported weekend traffic rose a solid 4.3 percent for the same three-day period as compared to 2006 - as Friday again led the way with a 6.5 percent increase over last year followed by Saturday's 1.3 and Sunday's 3.9 percent respective increases.
"The numbers our retail clients are reporting clearly show that shoppers took advantage of Black Friday sales promotions to start the 2007 holiday shopping season off on a better-than-expected note, with post-Thanksgiving weekend sales helping continue this momentum throughout Saturday and to a lesser extent Sunday," said Bill Martin, co-founder of ShopperTrak. "Following a rather atypical retail year where we've seen declining traffic patterns with continued steady sales, the weekend traffic increase is undoubtedly a welcome sight for retailers." Martin continued: "Due to the length of the holiday shopping season, with 32 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we expect to see a bit of a spending lull over the next few weeks, followed by the traditional season-ending sales boost spurred by procrastinating shoppers."
ShopperTrak also reported that sales for the week ending November 24 as compared to the same period in 2006 were up 3.7 percent. On a week-over-week comparison, sales rose 21.5 percent as compared to the previous week ending November 17.
Developed by ShopperTrak, the NRSE provides a nationwide benchmark of retail sales. It is derived from the U.S. Commerce Department's GAFO (general merchandise, apparel, furniture, sporting goods, electronics, hobby, books and other related store sales) statistic, as well as ShopperTrak's proprietary industry intelligence on shopper movement and sales statistics. This gives retailers, investors and policy makers the most accurate and timely information on consumer trends available today.
ShopperTrak's SRTI is generated from a carefully drawn sample of more than 50,000 retail and enclosed mall locations throughout the United States. The product is a set of six calculated indices for select segments of the retail industry that compare current week mall or store traffic to a baseline traffic figure from a fixed week on the NRF calendar. The SRTI is priced by individual segment.
A privately held entity, ShopperTrak leverages 20 years of retail expertise to be the industry's authority for information and analysis of the movement of shoppers in retail environments. ShopperTrak's cutting-edge shopper tracking products and indices offer retail intelligence solutions that enable companies to better understand retail trends and the impact of store and staff performance on company revenues.
