ShopperTrak Reports Retail Sales Remain Steady for Third Week in a Row

Week-Over-Week NRSE Sales virtually flat

CHICAGO - September 01, 2009

ShopperTrak releases its NRSE GAFO Retail Sales estimates today, showing sales for the week ending June 13 to be down a slight - 0.3% compared to the previous week. This marks the third week in a row that weekly sales have held stable at virtually the same level.

On a year over year basis, NRSE GAFO Retail Sales Estimates are down 11% as compared to this same week last year, however, these weekly numbers are not comparable because Father's Day, which has moved to June 21st in 2009, occurred in the second week of June last year. For the month of June to date, retail sales are down -7.7% as compared to the same period in 2008.

The continued steadiness in week-over-week sales is cause for cautious optimism since, unlike the previous two weeks which had the stimulus of Memorial Day and graduation purchases, this particular week was "event-free."

Looking ahead, ShopperTrak expects a year over year increase for the week ending June 20 because of Father's Day. "Next week's numbers will be worth watching closely." ShopperTrak founder, Bill Martin commented. "We will have three weeks of June data comparable to last year, so we will have a good read on the direction for retail sales."
