Total U.S. Foot Traffic Falls 5.2 Percent for September

NRSE Monthly Sales Decline 1.7 Percent

CHICAGO, IL, October 14, 2009 - ShopperTrak RCT Corporation's Retail Traffic Index (SRTI) today reported that total U.S. foot traffic for the month of September fell 5.2 percent while the company's National Retail Sales Estimate (NRSE) reported retail sales slipped a slight 1.7 percent for the same period.

While retail traffic continues to show losses as compared to last year, the declines are narrowing over the last four months, with September representing the smallest traffic dip in over a year.  Previous to this, August, July and June traffic levels slipped 7.7, 9.7, and 12.2 percent respectively compared to the same months in 2008.

"This gradual pattern of increased traffic levels over the last few months should be encouraging for retailers as the critical holiday shopping season approaches," said Bill Martin, co-founder of ShopperTrak. "What remains to be seen is whether or not retailers can continue to boost traffic with early holiday discounts and door buster promotions and if this will be enough to make Q4 a lone bright spot in an otherwise gloomy retail year."

On a weekly level, ShopperTrak's NRSE reported sales for the week ending October 10 slipped 3.0 percent as compared to last year, while weekly sales declined 0.7 percent versus the previous seven-day period ending October 3.

Developed by ShopperTrak, the NRSE provides a nationwide benchmark of retail sales. It is derived from the U.S. Commerce Department's GAFO (general merchandise, apparel, furniture, sporting goods, electronics, hobby, books and other related store sales) statistic, as well as ShopperTrak proprietary industry intelligence on shopper movement and sales statistics.

The ShopperTrak Retail Traffic Index™ measures traffic across five separate retail segments including total U.S. retailing. Available as a database or in newsletter format, SRTI reports national and regional traffic trends in a rolling 16 month trend line.
